Thanks to Terri Middleton, who notes: "In 1926 St. Louis YMCA director Harold S. Keltner began the father-son Y Indian Guides program with the help of his friend and hunting guide Joe Friday, a member of the Ojibway tribe, and William H. Hefelfinger, the Guides' first Chief. The program stresses a father's role as guide, teacher & friend to his son, as well as Indian cultural beliefs such as respect for nature, care of family and spiritual life. The Indian Guides still exist today, as does the companion father-daughter program Indian Princesses."
