Thanks to Sam Talley, who notes "Work, draft, or dray horses were used to pull heavy wagons well into the 1920's and 30's. There were many breeds of big, strong horses such as the Shires, Clydesdale, and Belgian Drafts. They needed strength, patience, and a docile temperament. Feed and shoeing was expensive. The wagons they pulled were usually fitted with solid rubber tires and had stiff leaf-spring suspensions. When trucks were perfected and dependable the need for horses was phased out."
