Description

Assignment envelope notation reads: " Bauer twins killed by Tornow Sept 1911 ; McKenzie + Al Elmer March 8, 1912 - bodies found 4/16/1912 ; April 16, 1913 - Tornow shot by Quimby  ". Photos are credited to WL Hawkes. Three small prints were labeled : " ... Hopkins, G St. [?] S O 1970, John Tornow's Body, courtesy of Mike Kilgore Sheriff, Give to Jones Photo Historical Collection".
Thanks to Sam Talley, who notes:  "There are still some postcards and posters available of Tornow's body on display. I once met an old man who was born around 1900 and was raised up in the Satsop Valley area where Tornow lived as a loner in the woods. The old man said he had found two of Tornow's camp sites soon after he was killed. They were well-hidden lean-tos made of branches and bark with basic foods and clothes in them. This photo was taken at the abandoned Pillashak place. See also photo #57230_4.     Tornow was 6' 4"  tall and weighed 250 lbs. He was buried in the Matlock cemetery with a very simple marker. It was replaced in the 1980's with a beautiful granite headstone which sums up his 33 year life with 'FROM LONER - TO OUTCAST - TO FUGITIVE'."
