Description

Caption : "J. J. Ladley, Elma." Thanks to an anonymous commentator, who confirms that Ladley's Saloon was owned by James J. Ladley in 1915.
Thanks to Sam Talley who notes: "The saloons or taverns did not seem to have seating at the bar until the 1930's. Until that era they only had foot rails and usually spitoons. It would seem that the old saloon owners would have figured the customers would drink more if comfortably seated but such was not the case. Althoughin this photo there are chairs at the rear counter which must have been where customers sat and ate. The glass display case in the front is full of cigar boxes. At the near end of the bar is what looks like a cash register accessible to the customer, but actually it is a 5 cent one arm bandit gambling device that paid in cigars when the three objects in the windows at the top aligned. This writer has one of these antiques. I think this is the only picture in the Jones collection that has one of these in it."
