Thanks to Sam Talley, who writes: "In the 1950's a lot of these piers were partially dismantled or rotted away. Some would have just enough material and stability to allow us to fish from them for cutthroat trout. We'd also use them to get to duck hunting spots at the port docks on the Chehalis River. In the winter months the wind and rain made it very cold. Once, as seventh graders, to keep warm while duck hunting we built a fire in a hollow log which was about five feet through and eight feet long. It was laying on the dock. The rotten center made a hole about three feet across. The strong wind started blowing through the log and caught the whole thing on fire. It sounded like the roar of a jet engine. We could not put out the roaring fire, got scared, and ran away. About a half hour later we heard the fire truck sirens heading to put it out. We visulized the whole dock had burned up. We returned in a week or so and found the log still there and no damage done to the dock."
