Mt. St. Helens

Description

This aerial view by Stan Spiegle shows timber near Mt. St. Helens, which erupted on May 18, 1980.
Thanks to Sam Talley who notes: "It was a sunny Sunday morning on May 18, 1980. I was near Tacoma, Washington when I witnessed what was described as one of the deadliest and most economically destructive events in U.S. history. Mt. St. Helens was 'blowing her top'. Ash was shooting miles into the air. 1,131 feet of mountain top was gone, resulting in 57 deaths. One of those lost was a crusty, obstinate hermit named Harry Truman who lived at Spirit Lake near the bottom of the mountain and is now buried under millions of cubic feet of earth from the mountain because he refused to leave after being warned many times to evacuate."
