Thanks to Sam Talley, who writes: "The road that extends from the right side of this photo towards the top was known as Graveyard Hill Road. It cut through the hillside all the way up the hill. The city graveyard is at the top of the hill rise next to the trees. During the Depression when my grandfather George Bowen worked for the WPA they widened this road. When it rained hard, Indian burial remains washed out from the freshly dug road hillside bank. This was an old Indian burial site. They were not complete bodies, but burial remains neverless. Local Indians, whose tribal ancesters had for many years lived on the shores of the Chehalis River at what became Cosmopolis, but were moved out via various treaties, were very angry. It was never determined how many graves were desecrated. The Indians had no real clout and it was soon forgotten.”
