Description

This aerial view by Stan Spiegle shows USS Johnnie Hutchins (DE-360), a John C. Butler-class destroyer escort named in  honor of Johnnie David Hutchins who was awarded the Medal of Honor for giving his own  life in order to save his shipmates. She was built by Consolidated Steel Ltd. of Orange Texas in 1944 and served in both the Atlantic and Pacific during WW II. She  displaced 1,350/1,745 tons, measured 306' overall length, with a beam of 36' 10", and  draft of 13' 4". Her speed was 24 knots. After decommissioning in San Diego on May 14, 1946, Johnnie Hutchins made two Naval Reserve training cruises to the Hawaiian Islands, including one in the summer of 1948. We assume she was photographed in Grays Harbor after this cruise.
