The panorama shows Aberdeen just before the Great Fire. The book "On the Harbor : From Black Friday to Nirvana" by John C. Hughes and Ryan Teague Beckwith notes that the Aberdeen Fire started in a rooming house, the Arctic Hotel, on the morning of "Black Friday", October 16, 1903 and burned until 2pm, destroying 140 buildings on seven city blocks. Damages were estimated at $600,000 (the equivalent of about $10 million dollars in 2007). Four residents of the Arctic Hotel perished in the fire.
