A nearly identical image appears on page 44 of William D. Jones' "Motor Cars and Serv-Us Stations" with no identifying number. Book caption reads : "Gilmore Red Lion Gasoline record breaker economy run with a 1934 Pontiac four door sedan in Aberdeen, April 4, 1935."
Thanks to Sam Talley who adds: “Gilmore Oil Co. was founded in 1900 by A. F. Gilmore in Los Angeles. In the 1930’s the company operated 50 distributorship plants and 3,500 independent gas stations in California, Oregon, and Washington. By 1936 they had sold 98 million gallons of gas. In the 1940’s Mobil bought Gilmore. Today (2010) Gilmore memorabilia is very collectible. Gilmore Red Lion was a regular grade of gasoline with lead added. The Economy Run was a contest sponsored by Gilmore and Mobil from 1936 to 1968. Every year different car makers would compete to see which car could get the best fuel economy and use this distinction for advertising purposes."
