Description

Image includes Loomis Drugs, the Sport Shop, Ward Hotel, and Arcade Beauty Salon.
Thanks to Kathleen Peterson who notes: “Harry Loomis, born on May 14, 1908, was the son of Bud and Emma Loomis, Quinault area pioneers.  Mr. Loomis opened his Loomis Drug Store on Labor Day, 1935 in the two story building owned by his father at 8th and K Streets, Hoquiam.  After he returned from World War II, Harry purchased the building from his father and added doctor and dentist offices, as well as a coffee shop/lunch counter.  During his lifetime he was involved with several civic organizations. The drug store remained open until the Urban Renewal Era of the early 1960's."
Ms. Peterson adds: "Directly across the street from Loomis Drug Store on 8th Street was a neat restaurant called "The Oriole".  I remember going in there with my father during the late 40's and on thru my high school years.  It was run by Mrs. Zilla Moore who made the best hamburgers on earth for 65 cents.  Marshmallow cokes were delicious.  My uncle met his wife-to-be there in the 1940's.  Hand-packed ice cream was a specialty and all sorts of fountain treats like Green Rivers, root-beer floats, cherry phosphates and hot fudge sundaes could be made in a wink.  The Oriole Restaurant is still going strong today but it is now located in the 700 block of J Street in Hoquiam and is under new ownership by a lady named Dixie.
