Thanks to Sam Talley who notes: “As the logs are dumped into the water, these 'boom men' use their long pike poles to assemble the logs into rafts so they can be moved to the mill. These boom tenders had very dangerous jobs, working with big logs dumped into a relatively small area with a lot of water and log movement. Having a dry set of clothes was a must because they were getting knocked into the pond with logs constantly shifting around them. The pike poles were made of spruce until the mid-1950’s."
