The trade name for these big square-cut timbers was "Jap Squares". They were shipped to Japan for re-milling into finished lumber there.
Thanks to Sam Talley who adds: "The owner of this mill was William J. Donovan (1855-1938) who came to Aberdeen in 1893 and bought two sawmills named Donovan #1 and Donovan #2. They were on the Donovan Slough at the Chehalis River in South Aberdeen. This mill was purchased in 1910 from Almerian (Al) Stockwell and became a major sawmill in the area. It closed in 1932. Donovan also owned an interest in the Donovan Shipping Company."
