Thanks to Kathleen Peterson who shares this story: “The J.C. Penney Store stood at the corner of 7th and J Streets in Hoquiam and was a landmark in the town for many years. My mother took me shopping there many times while growing up in the 1940's thru the 1960's. This store had a very unique feature in its heyday with the main store cashier rising high above the main floor, as no clerk had a cash register during this time. I always wanted my mother to pay for something so she paid cash and would need to get change. The clerk would put the money in a little cartridge container and would then press a button and the container would travel up to the cashier above. She would then make the proper change and then back down to the customer it would come as if by magic This system stayed in this store for some time until eventually it was replaced by the cash register around the mid 1950's. Eventually this store was closed and everyone ventured to the Aberdeen store located on the corner of Broadway and Heron Streets to do their shopping at Penney’s.”
