Dunn's Grocery & Meat Market was owned by Benjamin Joseph Dunn (known as B. J. to his friends ) and his son Floyd Omar Dunn. Floyd Dunn, son and grandson respectively of Floyd and Benjamin, recalls "My grandfather and my father ... owned the building and rented out the left side to a man who operated a beer tavern. They received beef on the hoof and slaughtered the meat in the back of the store. Chickens were killed in the back of the store and feathered in a large hot tub. Dill pickles and sauerkraut were aged in large wooden barrels. Locked wooden containers were located inside a large frozen locker room and rented out to customers for storing frozen food. All produce was displayed in open wood boxes. Customers were allowed to carry a line of credit with the store until payday. Swanson's store was to the right and a Safeway store was just across the street".
Floyd Omar Dunn died in 1942 and two years later, the family sold the store. The younger Floyd Dunn still remembers riding on his father's shoulders down to the street corner. The day was October 1, 1937 and the five-year-old and his father witnessed President Franklin Roosevelt's visit to Grays Harbor. He recalls that Roosevelt got out of his car and briefly addressed the crowd. Thanks to Floyd Dunn for contributing information.
