Description

"In the front row, 7th from left (with mustache) is Harvey Williams, but he was known in the woods as Peggy. His left leg was injured in a logging accident as a young man and the leg never healed properly so he walked with a limp that resembled that of a man with a peg leg. He was very active in the IWA and was often a shop steward or a union trustee which accounts for his presence at the union meeting. He began working in the woods some time before WWI and was fairly well known among loggers. After his injury, he operated steam donkeys, eventually diesel machines and the last years of his work, he was fireman on the Shay locomotive at M&B on John's River. I think it was the last one operating in Washington State. He was moving it by himself on a weekend in 1951 and the boiler blew up, throwing him out the window which likely saved his life. He was about 70 years of age at that time and he retired."
