Thanks to Sam Talley, who adds: "The clothes washing machine has the electric motor exposed at the bottom of the machine. The early ones could shock you if they got wet. The wringer on the top had rubber rollers that, when turned on, would squeeze the water out of the clothes as it forced the items between rotating rollers. It wrung out water like the modern 'spin cycle' does on present washers. They could be dangerous if you caught the clothing you were wearing or, forbid, your hand, between the moving rollers."
