Thanks to Sam Talley who notes: "Preachers Slough was named after the Reverend J.S. Douglas. In about 1859 he left Cosmopolis in a rowboat up the Chehalis River on his way to Isaiah Scammons house in So. Montesano. He attempted to take a short-cut when he turned right into a slough which dead-ended. So he had to back-track and was late arriving at the Scammons dinner. Word got out about his error and the slough was jokingly called the 'Douglas Cut-off' and later Preachers Slough, which stuck."
Mr. Talley adds this story:  "The tracks in the foreground are on the main line. The log dump tracks are along the water. The dumper machine was stored in the metal building. The log rafts were tied to the pilings across the slough. There is a floating plank walkway between the pilings. When we were kids swimming in this area we had to be very careful that we did not get splinters in our bare feet when walking on these walkways. The boom men wore caulk or cork shoes and splintered the walkways badly."
