Thanks to Susan Larson who notes: "The hospital was located in the 2100 block of Simpson Avenue. At some point the fire escape stairs were removed and huge tubular chutes, about 3 feet in diameter replaced the stairs on each side of the building, coming from a third story window. Who knows why the powers that be decided to install the chutes. The end of the chutes were about 3 - 4 feet off the ground. I assume they felt it would be a fast way to evacuate the third floor in a hurry. It was probably a good idea, but it would have been quite a landing for any poor soul that had to use it. If it ever had to be used, it would have created havoc. People would be piled on top of one another. It's a good thing the building was torn down instead of burning down."
