Thanks to Chief Dave Carlberg who notes: "With the usual westerly wind blowing down the channel, fire crews were focused in the upper left of the photo to prevent the spread to the main sawmill and powerhouse. Firefighters cut a number of openings in the dock to combat the flames. They inserted a special nozzle down the holes called a 'cellar nozzle' which spins and throws large volumes of water in all directions. Considered one of the worst maritime fire disasters in City of Aberdeen history, the fire began late in the afternoon under the main Weyerhauser dock and eventually spread to the log ship SANYO MARU. The ship was moved directly across the river to the Ultican dock and the fire was fought by crews from Hoquiam and Montesano. As a result sprinkler systems were soon required under wharfs and piers and the city aquired a new fireboat."
