A local teacher recalls: "I started teaching in this old building in Sept. 1942. At the time I [taught] a group of thirty-nine 5th graders. Quite a challenge. I spent several years there before the building was replaced. [Her eldest son] started Kindergarten there and later spent his second year as a teacher in this old building. Good memories. The fire escapes were a real challenge to get a class of 39 down with no accidents. Also, teachers had to accompany the entire class every time we left 3rd floor to the main floor, or the basement. That was several times a day. Good exercise." Thanks also to Steve Fletcher, who "lived directly accross the street from this grand old building and started there in 1951". He adds that "the photo was taken in front of Youngs Grocery on the corner of 2nd and Conger St. at the time Tilly Graham was teaching at A. J. West."
