Hood Canal
Pacific Oysters were introduced to the Skagit flats in about 1904-1908. They were obviously well naturalized here around 1925. Native oysters did not grow this large or on exposed rocks. Brinnon was to be the site of the future Washington State Dept of Fisheries Shellfish Lab but it was not built until after WWII. Production records for shellfish from Washington Dept of Fish & Wildlife don't exist before 1936. It is known that Hood Canal was the first place where the Pacific Oyster naturalized so this photo provides an important benchmark. Thanks to Peter Becker, CEO of Little Skookum Shellfish Growers LLC, Shelton, Washington for contributing information.
