A photograph similar to this appears on page 67 of William D. Jones' "Motor Cars and Serv-Us Stations". The book caption reads : "Les Parkhurst Gilmore Oil Co. Red Lion Gas Station in Elma, Washington. September 4,1940. Built out of Super Harbord Plywood."
Thanks to Sam Talley who adds “Red Lion was the name of a regular grade gasoline with lead added. Gilmore Oil Co. was founded by A. F. Gilmore in 1900 in Los Angeles. By the 1930’s the company operated 50 distributorship plants and 3,500 independent gas stations in California, Oregon, and Washington. By 1936 they had sold 98 million gallons of gas. In the 1940’s Mobil bought Gilmore Oil and the stations then sold other brands. Gilmore memorabilia is very collectible indeed."
