Description

Banner visible in image 6083_1: "Fellow Worker McKay, murdered at Bay City Mill by a Co. gunmen, May [3?] 19[23?], Victim of Capitalistic Greed ! WE NEVER FORGET?"
Thanks to Sam Talley who notes: “In May 1923 logger William McKay, a member of the IWW union (Industrial Workers of the World or 'Wobblies'), was picketing at the Bay City Mill in South Aberdeen. The protesters were trying to organize mill workers into joining a big union representing skilled and unskilled employees. He was shot in the back of the head by a hired gunman in an attempt to disrupt the strikers."
Additional thanks to William Smay who notes "This photo is looking south on Young St. in Aberdeen, several of the structures seen here still exist today."
