Presentation outside Root Paint & Glass Co. of facsimile prize check to Chas. Hedgpeth for winning the Hoquiam Rain Derby. Looking at the official rain guage is Herbert Gill Root, on the right next to the window of the Root Paint and Glass store. Thanks to Mr. Root's grandson, James F. Wright for providing information. Additional thanks to Terri Middleton who notes: "The Rain Derby began as a fundraiser in 1938 by local charities. It was eventually taken over by the Lions Club whose first gift was to the Hoquiam High School band for new uniforms. The check for $407.73, given to Charles Hedgpeth, the Derby's first winner, was made of wood. The Hoquiam Rain Derby is still held every year."
