The COL. P.S. MICHIE was built to meet the extreme conditions of digging and seaway encountered on the sand bars of the river entrances of the North Pacific, particularly at Coos Bay, Oregon. Commissioned in 1914 after being constructed at the Seattle Construction and Dry Dock Co. at a cost of $378,198, the Michie had A steel hull with a length of 244.6 feet, width of 20 feet; draft (light) of 11 feet, draft (loaded) of 17 ft.; displacement (light) of 1708 tons and displacement (loaded) of 3372 tons. Her speed (light) was 10 knots and loaded 8 knots; engines, 1780 hp.
