This aerial view by Stan Spiegle shows the neighborhood around Elma High School. An air route marker can be seen on the roof of the school. Beginning in 1926, before reliable radios, these markers were painted on the roofs of barns, schools, and all kinds of buildings around the country, with most of the work done by local volunteers. By 1941, there were 13,000 of these markers with arrows pointing north as well as the direction to the nearest airfield. In 1944, latitude and longitude were added.
