Description

Thanks to Sam Talley who notes: "In this photo the fourth building on the left with the door cut into its corner would in 1922 become the Corner Drug Store, owned by Leonard Carlson. He operated it until the 1970's. The store had everything: fishing tackle, jewelry, perscription drugs, and an old hometown soda fountain. Every Saturday after the chores were done my grandfather George Bowen and I would have Mr. Carlson make us root beer milkshakes at 25 cents each. Kids would come from Aberdeen and Hoquiam for his famous Green River fountain drinks. Those were really the 'Good Old Days'."
Mr. Talley adds: "Soda fountains were popular from 1900 to about 1960. Most were in drug stores. They were a place to socialize, eat ice cream, and have soft drinks. Food items were limited. The 'soda jerk' would make drinks by mixing flavored syrups, carbon dioxide, and water. The fountains served all flavors of soda, milkshakes, malts, root beer, banana splits, sundaes, etc.  Nowadays few authentic soda fountains remain. The drive-ins and self-service machines contributed to their demise."
