Thanks to Sam Talley, who notes: "The Ross lumber carrier or straddle carrier was invented by Harry B. Ross and was first built by the Ross Carrier Company in 1913. The company name was later changed to Stetson-Ross Machine Works and was located in Seattle. The first electric one had a lift capacity of 12,000 lbs. The Polson Museum in Hoquiam has a restored Ross carrier intended for parades. When we were kids in our parent's car waiting in line at the Harbor Drive-in, we'd always talk about how 'handy' it would be to have one of these lumber carriers. We thought we could straddle the line of cars and go directly to the front!"
