Thanks to Sam Talley, who adds this story: "In about 1955 when I was 12 yrs. old an ad appeared in the Aberdeen World newspaper for kids to earn extra money. We met in one of these hotels with a salesman who hired about ten of us to go into different neighborhoods and sell magazine subscriptions. Homeowners would sign subscription order cards which recorded their names, addresses and the titles of magazines they wanted. We were to get $2 per subscription for our efforts. I sold 20 subscriptions. We turned the cards in to the salesman who was going to call the info into his boss and settle up with us the following morning. We had gotten about 125 subscripions. When I showed up at the hotel to collect, the lobby counterman said the salesman skipped out in the night cheating us kids out of our money. That was one of the best 'business lessons' I ever learned in dealing with strangers."
