Thanks to Sam Talley who notes: "John D. Schafer was German born in 1821. He came to Olympia in 1870 and took a canoe down the Chehalis River and up the Satsop River to what was later known as Schafer Prairie where he built a cabin in 1871. He had his three sons start logging his timbered homestead acreage, thus starting the Schafer Bros. Logging Co."
